Gold Is Fighting the Bond Market

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to 4.8122% — its highest level in roughly three years.

For gold, this may be the most important number today.

Oil is rising. Inflation concerns have not disappeared. Geopolitical risk remains elevated.

Normally, that combination should be supportive for gold.

Yet gold is falling.

Right now, higher yields and a stronger dollar are simply outweighing safe-haven demand. When investors can earn close to 5% on U.S. government debt, holding a non-yielding asset like gold becomes less attractive for part of the market.

What I find more interesting is the tension underneath.

Higher oil prices can keep inflation pressure alive. Higher yields make financing more expensive for governments, companies, and households. And geopolitical uncertainty has not disappeared just because bond yields moved higher.

So gold is under pressure today in exactly the kind of environment that could strengthen its longer-term investment case.

Gold is losing to yields right now. The bigger question is how long the economy and financial system can comfortably handle yields around these levels.
