7.1 Million Ounces Left COMEX in a Single Week

Silver inventories on COMEX fell by approximately 7.1 million ounces in a single week, bringing total stocks down to around 330 million ounces.

A decline in COMEX inventories does not mean the exchange is about to “run out of silver.” Metal moves in and out of warehouses for many reasons, and the total inventory figure alone does not tell us that the market is facing an immediate shortage.

But when millions of ounces leave in a short period of time, we think it is worth paying attention.

The more interesting question is not whether COMEX has enough silver today. It does.

The question is what happens if physical demand remains strong while available inventories continue to trend lower.

That is where warehouse data starts to become useful.

COMEX is often discussed as if every ounce sitting in its vaults were the same. It is not that simple. Some metal is classified as registered and is available for delivery against futures contracts, while other metal is eligible and may not actually be intended for that purpose.

So the total number of ounces tells us only part of the story.

If inventories fall for one week and then rebuild, it may mean very little. But if repeated withdrawals begin to develop into a broader trend, especially while physical availability tightens elsewhere, the signal becomes more interesting.

Silver already has a physical-market story behind it.

Industrial demand remains important, mine supply cannot respond instantly to higher prices, and a large share of global silver production comes as a by-product of mining other metals. That means the supply side may not be able to react quickly when demand strengthens.

Futures positioning can change in a matter of days.

Physical metal moves more slowly.

And sometimes the most interesting developments in the silver market happen quietly inside warehouses while most of the attention is focused on the latest price candle.

A weekly decline of 7.1 million ounces is not proof of a shortage.

But it is enough metal to keep COMEX inventories firmly on our radar.

The question now is simple: do inventories stabilize around 330 million ounces, or do the withdrawals continue?
