Gold Is No Longer a Side Note in Poland’s Reserves

According to the World Gold Council, Poland bought 90 tonnes of gold in the first seven months of 2026. By the end of July, it held roughly 640 tonnes, putting it about 91% of the way to its 700-tonne target. Gold accounted for around 28% of its reserves.

That is no longer a small insurance policy tucked away for a crisis. Gold has become a significant part of Poland’s reserve holdings. And the central bank kept adding to it even after accumulating hundreds of tonnes.

For comparison, the Czech central bank has also been buying steadily, but gold made up about 6% of its reserves in the same July data. China held far more gold than Poland in absolute terms, yet gold accounted for roughly 8% of its reserves. Tonnes alone do not tell the whole story. The weight a central bank gives gold in its reserves matters too.

We would be careful, though, about assuming that every additional tonne will push the gold price higher. In the short term, the dollar, bond yields and futures positioning may have more influence on price. Central bank purchases work on a different timeline. They tell us how institutions are thinking about their reserves over the coming years, not where they expect gold to trade next week.

Here are three things we are watching in Poland’s numbers:

  • Will purchases continue as holdings approach 700 tonnes?
  • Could the central bank raise its target?
  • How will gold’s share of reserves change? That figure can move with the gold price and the value of other reserve assets.

As of July, Poland was roughly 60 tonnes short of its stated target. Reaching 700 tonnes would not, by itself, tell us what comes next. The decision after that may reveal more: is 700 tonnes the destination, or simply the current milestone?

When a central bank keeps buying with gold already at such a high share of its reserves, we pay attention. Poland shows that, for some reserve managers, gold is more than a token allocation. It carries real weight on the balance sheet.
