Economist Judy Shelton, who was nominated to the Federal Reserve Board by Donald Trump in 2019, has long advocated for a greater role for gold in the U.S. monetary system. One of her most notable proposals is to issue long-term gold-backed U.S. Treasury bonds on July 4, 2026, to mark America’s 250th anniversary.
According to Shelton, such a move could strengthen confidence in the U.S. dollar, make use of America’s gold reserves to support public finances, and serve as a first step toward reforming the current monetary system.
