India has just announced another very concrete example of how quickly AI infrastructure is expanding.
Tata Consultancy Services and its partners plan to invest up to 700 billion rupees, or roughly $7.4 billion, in a new AI data center campus in Telangana with 1 GW of capacity.
That one gigawatt is more interesting to me than all the broad talk about an “AI boom.”
AI is not just software.
Behind every new model sits physical infrastructure: servers, transformers, switchgear, backup power, cooling systems, cabling, connectors, and a huge number of electrical components.
Silver, thanks to its exceptional electrical conductivity, is used across many contacts, connections, electronics, and power systems. One data center alone obviously will not move global silver demand.
But more of these projects are being announced.
And they are getting bigger.
1 GW is no longer a small tech facility. It is a power-intensive industrial campus.
This is a much better way to look at the connection between AI and silver, in my view: not through big forecasts about how much metal AI might consume one day, but through the actual infrastructure being built now.
If the current wave of data center investment continues, demand for the electrical infrastructure around them should grow with it.
And silver is one of the metals buried deep inside that electrification.
Not in one large piece.
But across millions of small components.
