Japanese investors sold nearly $30 billion worth of U.S. Treasury bonds in the first quarter. While this amount alone is not enough to threaten the U.S. bond market, it is a noteworthy signal given that Japan is one of the largest foreign holders of U.S. government debt.
If other major foreign investors were to follow the same path, it could increase pressure on both U.S. debt and the U.S. dollar. Over the longer term, such a development could strengthen investor demand for gold and silver as safe-haven assets.
