This is one of those trends that I think deserves far more attention than it gets.
Tether reportedly purchased more than 27 tonnes of gold in the first half of 2026 alone. That is no longer a negligible amount — it is comparable to the purchases of some central banks.
And that contrast is what I find most interesting:
- Tether built its business around digital assets.
- Yet it is putting billions of dollars into physical gold.
- Gold is gaining another major buyer outside the traditional central banking system.
- And 27 tonnes represents roughly 870,000 troy ounces of gold.
There is something almost paradoxical about it.
One of the biggest players of the digital financial era is increasingly turning to an asset that has preserved wealth for thousands of years.
