Methodology & data notes

These are daily par real yield curve rates based on TIPS market quotations, not yields from individual bond auctions. The table shows the mean of available daily readings in each of the latest 12 calendar months; the latest month may be partial and updates when new official rates are saved. Monthly changes are in percentage points. The snapshot’s 1-month comparison uses approximately 21 trading sessions. The 10-year maturity is selected by default; the cards switch between maturities. The 1-year view shows monthly-average bars; 5 years and All show annual averages. All includes verified history since 2010. The 30-year series starts February 22, 2010. Rates may be revised, weekends and U.S. holidays have no new reading, and a real yield alone does not predict gold prices.

What Do U.S. Real Yields Show?

Real yields indicate the inflation-adjusted return available in the U.S. Treasury market. This tracker follows the Treasury’s daily par real yield curve for 5-, 10- and 30-year maturities, based on TIPS market quotations. The figures are daily readings, not live bond prices or yields from individual auctions.

Looking across maturities helps show whether changes are concentrated in one part of the real yield curve or extend across longer periods.

Why Do Real Yields Matter for Gold?

Gold pays no interest, so changes in real yields can affect the appeal of holding it relative to interest-bearing assets. Higher real yields can create a headwind for gold, while lower real yields can reduce that pressure. The relationship is not automatic: currency moves, investment demand, central-bank buying and geopolitical risks also matter.

For broader context, compare this tracker with the gold price chart and the U.S. Dollar Index.

How to Read the Data

Frequently Asked Questions

What are U.S. real yields?

U.S. real yields represent the inflation-adjusted yields available in the Treasury market. They are commonly measured using Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS.

What is the difference between nominal and real Treasury yields?

Nominal Treasury yields do not directly adjust for inflation. Real yields reflect inflation-adjusted returns and therefore provide a different view of interest rates and purchasing power.

Why are real yields important for gold?

Gold does not pay interest, so changes in inflation-adjusted yields can affect its relative attractiveness. Higher real yields can create a headwind for gold, while lower real yields can reduce that pressure.

Can real yields be negative?

Yes. Real yields can fall below zero when inflation-adjusted returns on Treasury securities are negative. Negative real yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-interest-bearing assets such as gold.

Are real yields the same as TIPS auction yields?

No. The daily real yield curve is based on market quotations for Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities across selected maturities. Auction yields refer to the results of individual Treasury security auctions.
