Sources, methodology & reuse
Source: Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Central bank policy rates, WS_CBPOL 1.0. Data are checked centrally once daily per feed; BIS normally publishes updates weekly. Dates on cards are observation dates, not central bank announcement dates. This is not a real-time rate feed.
Cards show the latest daily observation available in the saved BIS feed. Charts and the expandable table use monthly end-of-period observations. The newest point can be a daily observation in an unfinished month, explicitly labelled partial. Previous months are not monthly averages. Lines guide the eye between sampled observations; they do not date intra-month policy decisions. Missing periods are not filled.
Changes are in basis points (bp): one percentage point equals 100 bp. Card changes compare the displayed rate with the preceding calendar month-end. Historical table changes compare consecutive calendar months; gaps produce unavailable changes. “Common month · major economies” compares the shared initial 15 economies with data for the selected view in the same completed month (the optional CPI comparison excludes outdated matched histories from this reference group); other areas use that month or show unavailable; the focus panel still shows the latest available point.
BIS selects the rate that best represents each economy’s policy intentions. It may be a target, repo, deposit, lending or representative market rate. For the United States the current series is the midpoint of the Fed target range, not its upper bound or the effective federal funds rate. No range boundaries are reconstructed. China’s series is the 1-year Loan Prime Rate, not its 7-day reverse repo rate. The euro area series uses the ECB deposit facility rate from 18 September 2024; earlier observations use other instruments documented by BIS. Historical series can contain instrument changes and breaks.
“Policy minus CPI” is an optional, same-month comparison using locally cached headline data from the separate Silver Dominion Global Inflation Tracker. It subtracts annual CPI/HICP inflation from the BIS month-end policy rate, in percentage points. Both inputs and their month are shown. It is a backward-looking proxy, not a market real yield, an inflation-adjusted bond return or a measure of expected inflation. Different CPI methods remain relevant. No extra external data request is made; unavailable pairs remain blank.
In Default order, the first cards use the same 15 jointly covered economies across all five global trackers, ordered by 2025 nominal GDP in World Bank WDI; phones initially show the same first 8 entries. This is an introductory selection, not an indicator ranking. Selecting Highest, Lowest or Country name A–Z reorders the entire available list, including the first 15/8 cards; Show more economies continues in the selected order. Economies without a comparable observation appear last in value rankings. The euro area is distinct from the European Union; definitions and historical membership follow each official source. Global Interest Rates: Compare Central Bank Policies Worldwide
Central banks do not always move in the same direction. While some economies face pressure to keep interest rates elevated, others may be cutting borrowing costs to support growth. These differences can influence currencies, capital flows and financial markets worldwide.
The Global Interest Rates Tracker provides the latest available central bank policy rates across 20 major economies, including the United States, China, the euro area, Japan and India. Using official Bank for International Settlements (BIS) data, it allows visitors to compare interest rates by country, explore historical trends and track changes in monetary policy.
For a more detailed look at American monetary policy, our Fed Interest Rate & FOMC Tracker follows Federal Reserve decisions, historical rate changes and upcoming meetings.
Why Interest Rates Differ Between Countries
Central banks adjust monetary policy according to domestic economic conditions. Inflation, employment, economic growth and financial stability all influence their decisions.
Higher policy rates generally make borrowing more expensive, while lower rates can encourage lending, spending and investment. However, comparing countries requires understanding that central banks use different policy instruments, including repo rates, deposit rates and target ranges.
Interest rates also need to be considered alongside inflation. Our Global Inflation Tracker provides CPI comparisons across major economies, helping investors understand differences in price pressures and monetary conditions.
How Global Interest Rates Affect Gold and Silver
Central bank policy influences bond yields, exchange rates and the opportunity cost of holding precious metals.
Real interest rates are particularly important for gold. Higher inflation-adjusted yields can make interest-bearing assets more attractive, while falling real yields may support demand for gold.
Silver responds to many of the same monetary forces, although its substantial industrial uses make economic growth and manufacturing activity important additional factors.
Investors can examine related movements in our U.S. Treasury Yields Tracker or explore historical relationships through the Gold & Silver Macro Comparison Dashboard.
Comparing global interest rates provides valuable context for monetary policy and precious metals markets, but no single rate decision can reliably predict future gold or silver prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Global Interest Rates Tracker show?
The Global Interest Rates Tracker compares central bank policy rates across 20 major economies, including the United States, China, Japan, India and the euro area. It provides historical interest rate charts, country comparisons and policy rate changes using official Bank for International Settlements (BIS) data.
Which countries have the highest and lowest interest rates?
Central bank interest rate rankings change as monetary policies evolve. The tracker allows users to sort economies by their policy rates and identify countries with the highest and lowest reported levels. Users can also compare rates from a common observation period for a more consistent international comparison.
What is a central bank policy interest rate?
A central bank policy rate is an interest rate used to influence monetary and financial conditions. It affects short-term market rates, borrowing costs and saving incentives. However, policy rates are not the same as mortgage rates or commercial lending rates, which also reflect credit risk, funding costs and other factors.
Can central bank interest rates be compared directly across countries?
Policy rates can be compared, but their definitions differ between central banks. Some use deposit or repo rates, while others establish target ranges. The tracker identifies the selected instrument for each economy. Historical comparisons should also account for changes in policy frameworks and statistical definitions over time.
How often are global interest rates updated?
The tracker checks official BIS data daily, while the BIS normally publishes policy rate updates weekly. Central banks change their rates according to their own monetary policy schedules. The displayed figures represent the latest available published observations, not real-time trading rates. Historical data may also be revised.
What is the difference between nominal and real interest rates?
Nominal interest rates are expressed without adjusting for inflation. Real interest rates account for changes in purchasing power. The tracker’s Policy minus CPI comparison subtracts annual consumer price inflation from the policy rate for the same month. This is a backward-looking approximation, not a market-based real yield or expected real return.
How do central bank interest rates affect gold and silver prices?
Interest rate changes can influence precious metals through real yields, currency movements and investment demand. Higher real yields may weigh on gold because it pays no interest, while lower yields can provide support. Silver is also sensitive to industrial activity and economic growth. No single interest rate decision reliably predicts either metal’s price.
