Gold ETF Demand Is Accelerating Again

One number from the gold market stands out to me right now: 46.7 tonnes.

According to Reuters, that’s how much gold flowed into gold ETFs during the latest reported week. In dollar terms, the inflow was worth roughly $6.4 billion, making it the strongest weekly inflow in about ten months.

After a relatively quiet period for ETF demand, that’s a meaningful shift.

I watch ETF flows because they tell us something different from price action or futures positioning. When investors increase their exposure through physically backed gold ETFs, the funds may need additional bullion to back newly created shares.

So this isn’t simply more contracts changing hands on a futures exchange. At least part of that investment demand can translate into additional physical gold being absorbed by ETFs.

The timing is also interesting. Central banks remain significant buyers, private investment demand is still present, and gold prices are already elevated. If ETF investors are now returning in size as well, another major source of demand is entering the market.

46.7 tonnes in a single week is large enough that I wouldn’t dismiss it as noise.

The question now is whether this was simply one unusually strong week, or whether Western investors are starting to return to gold on a much larger scale.
