What Does This Result Mean?
Methodology: Annual average U.S. CPI-U is used for every currency (not local inflation). Annual gold and silver prices are approximate USD averages, converted at approximate annual exchange rates. EUR values before 1999 are illustrative historical equivalents. Historical comparison years use annual averages, not year-end prices. Today uses current or cached metal quotes, but inflation only through the 2025 U.S. annual CPI-U; it is not a real return calculated through today. No premiums, spreads, taxes, storage, or fees. Live source: Gold API. Other sources: BLS, LBMA, Frankfurter FX. Historical results are estimates, not investment advice.

Understanding Returns, Inflation and Data Sources
Nominal returns measure investment gains or losses without adjusting for inflation. Inflation-adjusted returns account for changes in purchasing power, providing a clearer picture of real investment performance.
The calculator uses historical gold and silver prices, currency exchange rates, and the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI-U). Historical metal prices are based on annual averages, while the Today option uses current precious metal prices.
Important: U.S. CPI-U is used for all 10 currencies. Changing currencies adjusts monetary values but does not apply local inflation rates. The Today comparison uses the latest annual CPI-U available in the calculator, currently 2025.
Gold is widely viewed as a long-term store of value, while silver combines investment demand with industrial uses, often making its price more volatile.
Neither metal consistently outperforms inflation in every period. Results depend on market conditions, purchase timing, and holding periods.
All calculations are estimates and exclude dealer premiums, taxes, storage costs, and transaction fees. Historical performance does not guarantee future returns.

Gold & Silver Inflation Calculator FAQ
What is a Gold & Silver Inflation Calculator?
It is a tool that compares historical gold and silver investment performance with inflation. It helps investors understand nominal returns, inflation-adjusted results, and changes in purchasing power.
Does gold protect against inflation?
Gold has historically preserved purchasing power over some long periods and is widely regarded as a store of value. However, its price does not always rise alongside inflation, and performance can vary significantly across market cycles.
Does silver outperform inflation?
Silver has outperformed inflation during some periods and underperformed during others. Its combination of investment and industrial demand can produce greater price volatility than gold.
How are the calculations performed?
The calculator combines historical gold and silver prices, U.S. inflation data, and currency conversion rates to estimate investment performance. Historical comparisons use annual precious-metal price estimates.
Does the calculator use inflation data for each currency?
No. All calculations use the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) as the inflation benchmark. Selecting another currency changes the displayed investment values but does not apply that country’s domestic inflation rate.
How far back can I compare gold and silver prices?
Historical calculations begin in 1990. You can select different starting and ending years to compare gold or silver performance across various market periods.
Does selecting Today include current inflation?
Not entirely. The calculator uses current precious-metal prices for the ending investment value, while the inflation comparison relies on the latest annual CPI-U data included in the tool, currently 2025.
Are dealer premiums, taxes or storage costs included?
No. The calculations exclude dealer premiums, taxes, storage costs, transaction fees, and other investment expenses. Results are estimates intended for educational and research purposes.
